Officine Panerai is a brand of watches owned by Compagnie Financiere Richemont S.A. They design, manufacture, market and sell watches under the name Panerai through official dealers as well as company-owned boutiques worldwide. The company was founded in Florence, Italy in 1860. Its headquarters remain in Florence, while its manufacturing center has moved to Neuchatel, Switzerland. Panerai has a long history of reliability, even being used by frogmen (combat divers) in World War II.
Giovanni Panerai, an Italian born in 1825, founded Officine Panerai in Florence, Italy in 1860. By the early 20th century, and now under the leadership of Giovanni’s grandson Guido, Panerai had become an official supplier to the Royal Italian Navy, providing not only watches but precision instruments used in navigation as well. For 60 years the company provided watches to the Italian Marina Militare, but ceased in 1993 as the watches were no longer cost-effective and no longer met with naval specifications. In that same year, Officine Panerai began to launch into the civilian market. Thanks to a hefty endorsement from the inimitable Sylvester Stallone, the watches began to see a new surge in popularity.
Panerai has four major lines of watches, Historic, Contemporary, Manifattura and Special Editions. Most are only produced in limited runs, driving up both price and demand. Within the Contemporary line alone, prices fluctuate between $6,000 and $25,000. The wait for a Panerai can be excruciatingly long for consumers.
A Panerai watch is much like an automobile in that proper cleaning and maintenance will help to ensure a higher value down the road. Watches have a ton of moving parts, and if one of those parts is off by even a fraction of a degree, the entire mechanism will suffer. Make sure to take your Panerai in for a “tune-up” every four years or so to make sure all the bits and pieces inside the case of the watch are moving as they should. Regular cleanings can also have a dramatic effect on a watch’s value. A clean, polished bracelet and a well-functioning clasp can mean a world of difference when our team of evaluators is determining the final value of your Panerai watch. Make sure to hold on to your original box and paperwork as well. Not only does it add to the watch’s overall value, it helps our evaluator’s to establish the legitimacy of your Panerai.
