Franck Muller: Complicated, Beautiful

Leader in Luxury

Born in 1958, Franck Muller was raised in Switzerland by a family that encouraged equal measures of creativity and discipline. Soon after his classical training at l'École d'Horlogerie de Geneve, Muller began to build his name by restoring complicated watches for auction houses and collectors from around the world. When the Quartz crisis hit full swing in the early 1980s, Franck Muller decided to focus his creativity and discipline on building extremely complicated and unique timepieces.

The World Presentation of Haute Horlogerie

A few years after the company’s foundation in 1991, the Franck Muller group created the WPHH – a six day trade show to unearth exceptional timepieces to professional watchmakers and the international media. The WPHH is an incredible exhibition that hosts thousands of visitors from all over the world. This extremely exclusive event is the epitome of luxury, including water fountains, fireworks shows, and performances by artists like Ray Charles and Paul Anka.

Master of Complications

In 2007, Franck Muller presented the Aeternitas Mega 4, which was quickly dubbed the most complicated wristwatch in the world. The Aeternitas Mega 4 includes 36 complications and over 1400 components. With this watch on your wrist, all you have to do is glance to determine the date, month, leap-year cycle, moon phase, as well as the time of day in three different time-zones. Muller was always fascinated with the tourbillon, an addition to the mechanics of a watch escapement aiming to counter the effects of gravity. Developed in the late 1700s in order to achieve greater accuracy, the tourbillon is considered to be one of the most challenging watch mechanisms to make. Franck Muller designed the first three-axes tourbillon, the first ever tourbillon that could be seen though the face of the watch, and the biggest tourbillon ever housed in a wristwatch.

After the 2012 WPHH, Muller’s Tourbillon Rapide Thunderbolt was named the Technical Breakthrough of the year by Revolution, Singapore’s trade magazine. This particular wristwatch holds the fastest tourbillon in the world, completing a rotation in only five seconds, a significant decrease from the traditional 60 seconds.

A Brand to Watch

The Franck Muller brand has rapidly revolutionized the watchmaking world. Due to the combination of Muller's classical training Geneve and co-founder Vartan Sirmakes’ casemaking expertise, the company has created a brand to keep an eye on in Haute Horlogerie. You’ll recognize them for the Cintrée Curvex – the first curved body case – as well as their brightly colored dials and jumping hour hands. Though it was founded just over 20 years ago, the company today has over 50 patents, 48 extremely exclusive shops world-wide and 6 production sites in Switzerland. Frequently sported on such famous wrists as Robin Williams, Demi Moore, and Sir Elton John, Franck Muller has transformed a "boutique brand" into a stellar success.

Getting the Most Out of Your Franck Muller Watch

A Franck Muller watch is much like an automobile in that proper cleaning and maintenance will help to ensure a higher value down the road. Watches have a ton of moving parts, and if one of those parts is off by even a fraction of a degree, the entire mechanism will suffer. Make sure to take your Franck Muller in for a “tune-up” every four years or so to make sure all the bits and pieces inside the case of the watch are moving as they should. Regular cleanings can also have a dramatic effect on a watch’s value. A clean, polished bracelet and a well-functioning clasp can mean a world of difference when our team of evaluators is determining the final value of your Franck Muller watch. Make sure to hold on to your original box and paperwork as well. Not only does it add to the watch’s overall value, it helps our evaluator’s to establish the legitimacy of your Franck Muller.
