The radiant cut diamond was the creation of Henry Grossbard in 1977. It is said that the radiant diamond “made squares hip again.” Grossbard’s goal in creating the cut was to combine the elegance of the emerald cut stone with the brilliance of a round diamond. The radiant cut resembles a rectangle with the corners lopped off.
In 1977, Henry Grossbard, founder of the Radiant Cut Diamond Company (RCDC), created this cut of diamond. His intention was to create an alternative to the emerald cut, which had fallen out of popularity, by maximizing the brilliance of fancy colored diamonds. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) rates the radiant shaped diamond as a 'modified brilliant diamond. Its square or rectangular shape has a tendency to give the wearer the appearance of shorter fingers due to its girth.
The radiant cut will typically have 70 facets and a length:width ratio of 1.2-1.5:1. Grossbard often described himself as a sculptor and it was said that he possessed the ability to “see the rough” and have his vision in place before the first facet was ever cut. In order to create the radiant, Grossbard had to think outside the box, ultimately creating a new style of cutting, referred to as the brilliantized step cut. Diamonds with rounded edges utilize triangular facets to bring out the diamond’s brilliance, while diamonds with straight edges used long step cuts, creating a more glassy look. His vision was ultimately a success, capturing the elegance of the emerald cut without sacrificing any of the brilliance found in round counterparts.
