CHANEL is known for the elegant and simplistic designs it stands for. From clothing to perfume, every item CHANEL puts out is drenched in sophistication and style. Never straying too far from original designs, CHANEL has been able to stay true to its name through numerous generations bringing changes in both fashion and style. Known best for her iconic designs such as the “Little Black Dress” and the 2.55 quilted handbag, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel created a lasting brand that has had many swooning over for years.
In 1910, CHANEL opened its first shop at 21 Rue Cambon in Paris specializing in hats. Once the most famous actress in France began to wear and favor CHANEL, the brand gained reputation and the elegant style begins to catch on throughout Paris. From there it was a whirlwind of success for the brand, opening a boutique in the resort town of Deauville in 1913 introducing a sportswear collection to opening its first Couture House in 1915 followed closely by the iconic location at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris in 1918. The brand continued to gain momentum with the release of CHANEL No5, their first line of makeup, the iconic “Little Black Dress” known famously for versatility of being able to wear at night and during the day, along with their first line of skin care and going to Hollywood to outfit stars all within 10 years of opening their boutique in Paris.
Coco hit her peak of fame in 1935 employing over 4,000 workers while having 5 boutiques in Paris. Everything was heading in the right direction until the beginning of World War II. Once the war begin, people began to flee Paris, forcing the closure of all but one of the CHANEL boutiques. After the war was over, Coco was able to reinstate the brand and rise up through the remains she was left with.
Designing a new line, Coco is able to inspire yet a second fashion revolution. She launches the iconic 2.55-quilted handbag in February of 1955. This handbag was simple yet sophisticated and combines leather and gold to create a new style strap and allows women to now be hands free. Shortly after CHANEL launches the brands first men’s fragrance as well as the iconic two toned, black and beige, shoes. In 1960 the brand gained power with celebrities such as Jane Fonda, Jackie Kennedy, and Elizabeth Taylor wearing the stylish looks and the well-known CC logo. The brand had regained what it had lost during the war and was once again a powerhouse within the fashion industry.
After the death of Gabrielle in 1971, the brand continued to flourish pushing out their first ready to wear line in 1978 which became a huge success with women giving them the ability to dress simply yet sophisticated. When Karl Lagerfeld took over as Artistic Director in 1983, the brand began to get new wings, yet keeping the same elements in which made CHANEL the namesake it was. In 1987, CHANEL launches its first line of watches, followed closely by its first fine jewelry collection in 1993 in the heart of Paris.
CHANEL continues to be a top name in high fashion being recognized frequently for changing the fashion scene into what it is today. In 2005, the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York honored CHANEL with a grand exhibition. Today, CHANEL handbags, clothes, perfume and more demands admiration and when you see the likes of Jennifer Garner or Victoria Beckham go out for the evening wearing their CHANEL, you may wonder who’s wearing who.
