Our Professionally Trained GIA Certified Staff

Pawngo is proud to say that we have GIA graduate gemologists on staff to examine your jewelry. Our professionals have been formally educated on all matters relating to gemstones and jewelry. Their training allows them to accurately assess the value and authenticity of any jewelry that you send in.

What is the GIA?

The GIA is the Gemological Institute of America. It is a non-profit educational organization that was founded in the early 1930s. The GIA was responsible for developing the grading scale that is now used globally for assessing all diamonds and gems. They provide a number of educational courses for professionals as well as diplomas and certificates on a wide variety of subjects. Whenever you see an advertisement for GIA jewelry or GIA gems, you know that they have been inspected by a high skilled and trained professional for authenticity and quality. While the GIA does not produce any jewelry of their own, they do offer certificates for gems that have been inspected by their organization, which act as proof of valuation later on.

The GIA Grading Scale

The grading scale that was developed by the GIA for diamonds and other gems is known as “The 4 Cs”. That is, all gems are assessed for: cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. Each of these factors directly impacts the value of the gem being assessed. A high quality cut is one that produces a brilliant sparkle at face value, but also features symmetry at the craftsman level. Clarity is determined by the number of blemishes visible in the stone. The Color scale is used exclusively for white diamonds, making those that are purely colorless more valuable than those with a yellow or brown tint. Finally, Carat Weight is the actual weight of the gemstone in grams. One carat is roughly 0.2 grams. The heavier the stone, the more it is worth.
