Adapting an Original
Original In Its Own Right
The oval cut diamond is a variant of the round brilliant cut. The brilliance of the oval cut diamond is similar to the brilliance of the round brilliant cut diamond. The oval cut diamond can differ in shape, with long, thin ovals and short and fat ones. The shape of oval cut diamond you choose depends entirely upon your preferences. A short and fat oval cut diamond will give the illusion of a softer diamond, whereas a long and thin oval cut diamond will make the diamond look sharper.
A Rich History
According to written history, the first mention of an oval cut stone was in 1304 and it was called the Koh-I-Noor diamond. It weighed 186 carats and was oval cut and in the sixteenth century it was captured by the Rajahs of Malwa. It is believed it was set in the famous Peacock Throne which was made for Shah Jehan. Lazare Kaplan was the pride of the industry for his capabilities of taking imperfect diamonds and irregular diamonds and turning them into the most valuable cut diamonds that you can find. With his cleaving, he was so advanced and talented that he could take a diamond that another cutter deemed unworthy because of its imperfections, and expertly remove the diamonds flaws. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that Lazare Kaplan introduced his own cut, the modern oval cut diamond. His eye for detail allowed him the ability to not only create a diamond cut that was breathtaking in design, but also got him inducted to Jewelers International Hall of Fame.
