A Legendary Cut
Different from other stone cuts, emeralds themselves have a very rich history. Emerald comes from the Greek word for green. The emerald cut diamonds were rumored to help restore poor vision in ancient Greece. They were also used as temporary stress relievers, a much more expensive version of today’s squishy stress ball. Cleopatra, the Queen of the Nile, loved emeralds.
Shapes & Colors
An emerald cut diamond can be rectangular or square shaped cut with cut corners and stepped facets. The emerald cut diamond reflects less light than the standard brilliant cuts and needs to be of the highest quality as any inclusions can be visible. Typically higher carat emerald diamonds are preferred. The ratio of the length to the width should be about 1.5:1. A clarity range of VS1-2 is recommended.
In the Cut
The emerald cut diamond, along with most square or oblong cuts, utilizes the ‘step-cut’. Longer, thinner cuts are referred to as baguettes. The facets on a ‘Step cut’ or ‘Table cut’ are cut in steps, parallel to the edges which could be described as a pyramid with its top chopped off. These diamonds are bright, clear and shiny in appearance as its facets usually span the length or width of the stone, the facets gradually decreasing as they approach the table and culasse. The corners of an emerald cut stone are cut to protect the stone, as generally, sharp points are more vulnerable to getting chipped. This particular style of cut is very effective at reflecting light, especially in colored stones.
