Incredibly popular during the latter part of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century, the Cushion cut diamond remains as one of the most storied types of diamonds. It is based on the “Old Mine Cut” which was square in appearance with rounded corners. It featured a high crown, small table, and large facets, totalling 33 crown and pavilion facets.
An Old Prospect
The modern Cushion appears as a hybrid of the Old Mine and Modern Oval cuts. Although similar, the Old Mine featured 58 facets while the more modern Cushion features 64. The bottom of the gemstone has an open cutlet and a rectangular, almost square shape. The rounded corners give the stone the appearance of depth, which is very different from the brilliant cuts of today, which are cut to maximize light return. While not as fiery or brilliant as most modern cuts, the Cushion has a classic, romantic look that maximizes the luster of the gem.
Securing Its Place
The Cushion cut has a long and storied tradition, proven by the fact that so many of the world’s most famous gems are cut this way. Some examples of famous Cushion-cut gemstones are the blue Hope Diamond (45.52 cts), the Regent Diamond (140.5 cts) and the yellow Tiffany Diamond (128.54 cts), and the largest cut blue sapphire in the world, the 423 ct Logan Sapphire. Tiffany reintroduced the Cushion cut to popularity in 2003 when they unveiled the Cushion-cut Legacy Collection as one of their many iconic engagement ring styles. Again popular, the Cushion may still be hard to find. Despite being pervadingly in style, the cut is still considered unusual and therefore a rarity in today’s market.
